Today’s theme is point, shoot aaannnnd then retouch!

Actually no. My experience behind the camera, as a photographer and a graphic designer has taught me a very valuable lesson.

I remember a year ago I was very adamant at saying…”no worries!
I can always retouch that later” but oh no, no, no.
How I have to learn the hard way.

I spent this weekend working for a “photographer”, retouching several of his images, and I was astounded at the amount of  work that needed to be done that could have been fixed at the moment with hair brush or lets say moving your lights a little to the left to avoid glass reflections! Sigh…and still after spending and absurd amount of time on these images, he apparently wanted more refining, without raising my rate.

At first I was shocked, I am already at a decent affordable price, maybe even too affordable at my level, yet we came to a full stop.

I was disappointed at first, but once I awoke this morning and reviewed all my hard work, I can honestly say. THESE were amazingly retouched! Sadly he expects more for his bottom rate. I wish I had the courage to tell him and guide him in his next photo shoot.

Lessons like:

  • HIRE A MAKEUP ARTIST! HIRE A MAKEUP ARTIST!
  • Have your subject go from less clothes to more clothes, in order to avoid skin imprints.
  • Have your subject wash her wrists from the club stamp of last night!
  • Have the stylist bring in the correct SHOE size.
  • Adjust your lights, especially in glass/mirror environments. On and on!
